The Crown has found its final Princess Margaret in Lesley Manville.
I could not be more happy to be playing Princess Margaret. The baton is being passed on from two formidable actresses and I really don’t wish to allow down the side. Furthermore, to perform siblings with my beloved friend Imelda Staunton would be nothing short of a whole joy,” Manville said in a statement released by Netflix.
Manville was nominated for an Oscar for Phantom Thread. Her additional credits include Harlots, Another Year and Maleficent.
For The Crown‘s fifth season, Imelda Staunton will probably be enjoying Queen Elizabeth. Claire Foy originated the role and Olivia Colman took it around for seasons three and four. The Netflix drama from Peter Morgan follows Queen Elizabeth’s reign.
The fourth season hasn’t yet aired, but is set to star Colman, Bonham Carter, Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip, Ben Daniels as Antony Armstrong-Jones, Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles, Erin Doherty as Princess Anne and Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher.
Initially intended for 2 seasons, Netflix declared The Crown will finish with season five. “I am absolutely thrilled to affirm Imelda Staunton as Her Majesty The Queen for its fifth and last period, taking The Crown to the 21st Century. Imelda is an astonishing talent and is going to be a fantastic successor to Claire Foy and Olivia Colman,” Morgan, creator, writer and executive producer, said in a statement. “At the beginning I had envisioned The Crown running for six seasons but now that we have started work on the stories for now five it is now clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to cease. I am grateful to Netflix and Sony for encouraging me in this decision.”
“The first three seasons of The Crown defined an age, and I know that the upcoming fourth season will build further on this achievement. It is a stunning illustration of award-winning entertainment, created in the UK and adored by millions of fans around the world. I fully support Peter Morgan’s creative choice and am eager to see how he, Imelda Staunton and also the cast and crew of season , bring this landmark show to a fitting and spectacular finish,” Cindy Holland, vice president of content in Netflix, said in a statement.
